Sakdag: Program Initiative for Arts for Wellness and Recovery

Front liners may often be exposed to elevated anxiety, unending struggle with stress, and burnout that can be caused by seeing first-hand sensitive issues or traumatic experiences brought by the current pandemic situation. Typical scenarios include being anxious about their security, health and lack of time and difficulty in maintaining self-care practices as well as not having the right tools to manage their stress and anxiety.

SAKDAG: Program Initiative for Arts for Transformation is an art wellness program that aims to incorporate basic mental health strategies through consistent use of creative arts such as painting, dance, music, writing and theater to promote psychological, physical, and emotional health of the Negrense Front liners as well as affected by pandemic, disaster and those displaced by conflict.

Panakayon

“Panakayon sa Paranublion” (Journey into Heritage)

In 2013, The Negros Museum in partnership with various schools in Bacolod City, launched Panakayon sa Negros Museum (Journey to the Negros Museum) an interactive tour aimed to provide cultural enrichment to young audiences and their families.

In 2019, The Negros Museum re-launched another season of the Panakayon program: ANG MGA ISTORYA NI BAO (Stories of BAO) integrating values and lessons within storytelling sessions, performances, film showing, theatre & traditional games aimed engage young visitors and stimulate their imagination. That 2019 season, catering to around 4,000-grade school students coming from both DepEd and NOPSCEA schools.

As a response to the difficult times brought by the pandemic, The Negros Museum re-designs the Panakayon / Ang Mga Istorya ni BAO experience by migrating its programs using online platforms to continue its mission of promoting appreciation for history, heritage and culture and providing a space for self–expression and continuous art-making.

Hugpong Dayaw: Promotion of Negrense Culture

It is an acknowledged fact that there is a need for culture and arts to reach the level of consciousness of the majority of the people in a region. Negros Occidental has yet to reach a widespread audience and participation in the development of culture and the community.

“Hugpong-Dayaw,” which means “to unite and to show” utilizes a quad media approach in promoting the Negrense culture and the arts by collecting the works of different practitioners of music, literature, film, and visual arts (photography) in the Negros Occidental, to capture the unique and enduring culture and practices of its people. Through the key support of the Provincial Government, Hugpong Dayaw hopes to gather and create an archive of the works and use them as materials in promoting culture and in shaping the Negrosanon’s awareness of place, self and nation.

Sine Negrense: Negros Island Film Workshops and Festival

Sine Negrense: Negros Island Film Festival will provide an opportunity for Negrosanon filmmakers — first-timers, veterans, amateurs, professionals — to exhibit their films to a wider audience and to provide a platform to build networks.

Sine Negrense provides a viable outlet of expression, by giving voice to a new generation of Negrense filmmakers, as well as by cultivating an informed public on the importance of cinema and storytelling in the context of national identity, culture and heritage.

With a mission of providing an organized channel for the promotion, empowerment, support and advancement of culture and arts in Negros Occidental, Negros Cultural Foundation, Inc. is committed to the kindling of curiosity and value in the heritage of the province. NCF has established museums to promote this advocacy to the locals and to tourists alike. In the same way, it has also continued to foster cultural diversity in Negros by expanding the exposure of Negrense citizens to the art and culture of the rest of the world.

To keep the Negrense spirit alive for the decades to come, we must continue to tell the stories of Negros to the world. Hand in hand, we can be that voice that will preserve our place in history and be that deep sense of warmth and pride that will allow our very mores to endure for generations. Help leave the legacy that is our rich Negrense culture.
